About

Grace Hailstone (b. 1988) is a printmaker working between Suffolk and London, UK. Her experimental and predominantly abstract practice centres on an emotional response to landscape rather than any form of literal representation. Drawn to the isolated, dramatic and other worldly landscape of Iceland, Grace’s prints encapsulate contrasting earthly forms and expansive skies. Her work seeks to find calm spaces of contemplation, where we can reflect on our connection to nature and our place within it, while at the same time, these open spaces contain peripheral forms, grounding the viewer, or even making them aware of a constant looming peripheral threat. Her abstract images are based on lived experience, but, through the process of making, end up existing as images situated somewhere between reality and fiction. She allows the materials and elements of chance and unpredictability in printmaking guide her work to its final state.

Grace has been artist in residence in Skagaströnd, Iceland and Old Jet, Suffolk. Grace was mentored by the late Master Printmaker Stanley Jones MBE, who collaborated with many artists at the Curwen Studio for over 50 years, including Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Paula Rego and Prunella Clough.

Grace is a gallery and museum professional alongside her practice and is currently Archive Curator at the Curwen Print Study Centre.

In 2023 Grace was selected to help launch the new online Old Jet Gallery, which helps support and nurture emerging artists through the Airspace programme. You can read a piece about Grace’s work by author Louise Millar, view the works for sale and videos of Grace in the studio here.
